Reference Implementation

Often when a company comes up with a really clever idea for something, they write some software that demonstrates the idea, but is ofter very slow or otherwise not that good. Then other companies are encouraged to come along and write other, good versions that do the same thing. The original is called the reference and is really just there to make it easier for other people.

I reckon Bob Dylan songs are a bit the same. He writes the most awsomest songs, and then does reference versions so that other people can take the idea and fiddle with it. He approaches song-recording kind of that way. He doesn't take it that seriously, and just wants to have a good time. But on this Masked and Anonymous soundtrack, there are some really great covers of his songs, which aren't "better" than Bob's versions, but I reckon could easily be played on radio and stuff. Of course I think they should play all his songs on the radio, but I know other people don't think so.

  1. i remember hearing or reading someone once say (can’t remember where or when), “the only person who can’t do bob dylan well is bob dylan”.

  2. Well, as you can probably guess, I wouldn’t go that far. But there’s some truth to it.
