Green Left Daily

There's often a Green Left Weekly stand on the library walk at uni. The seller will often call out some bits of news from the week, which are often a bit funny. Yesterday it was "US will still call the shots in Iraq! Green Left Weekly! Something something facists something something imperial dogs." I'm not sure what they thought would happen. I don't understand understand the whole "troops out" argument. Do people think that everything would be fine? Isn't Afghanistan the perfect example of what happens when you don't have enough troops? I can believe that Iraqis would probably be much happier if it wasn't US soldiers in there. But unless someone wants to stand up and start a stable government by themselves in the next couple of months, then I can't see any other alternative.

I do believe that those Sadrists (as they're now being called) have the right to "fight back". Liberation is all in the eye of the beholder, and was over a year before anything tangible was achieved. If you can call this interim thingo tangible. For their own sake, I would probably have waited a few extra months before I start fighting back, but I think that right to do it is implicitly there. Though I guess you can argue that the fundamental right to defend yourself from any perceived threat it always there. The problem is that the US would have zero credibility left in their eyes, so it must be hard for them to wait when they consider the outcome inevitable.

I love the Green Left Weekly, if only for it's earnest commitment to anything that's anti-establishment. But they sure say some odd things.

  1. I sell GLW from time to time and yeah, some people do get a little carried away

  2. I should get a subscription. I really support what they’re doing. We desperately need alternative press. I do tend to disagree with most of what they say though. :)
