I reckon the whole mess with Iran highlights the craziness of the West. We are so morally condescending. Why shouldn't Iran have nuclear weapons, if India and the rest of the world can? Is it because Iran is mostly muslim, or because its leader doesn't like America? How do we manage to turn any debate where we feel threatened into a moral one? We're threatening Iran like it's a naughty child. But if you prefer to treat every nation as capable and essentially equal, then I can't see what it's done wrong. Unless you count being invaded and beaten to a pulp by America's old ally Iraq.
At the moment the cycle of reasoning sounds very similar to the build up to the Iraq war.
US: You're a threat to us and we don't like your beard so we might have to invade you. Iran: If you're going to invade us, then we're going to have to spend more on weapons. US: But but but... you can't do that. If you're going to spend more on weapons, we're really seriously going to have to consider invading you. We're not kidding.
If we don't want Iran to have nuclear weapons (which I don't), then we should bribe and beg them and offer them anything they ask rather than threaten them. Any country capable of making them has just as much right as anyone else. If the real issue is proliferation, then why not give all our nuclear weapons to the UN and let them decide when to arm and disarm.
