UN Declaration of Human Rights

I was sitting on the toilet reading the preamble to the UNDHR this morning, and I noticed the bit about not giving the oppressed cause for rebellion. It was suggesting that if only for the sake of peace, then human rights should be upheld. I can't remember exactly how it went, but I think this is a reasonable paraphrasing.

If respect and love for your fellow man does not compel you to dignify them and respect their rights, then perhaps the rather large likelihood that your fellow man will come and kill your wife and children should.

It's all in where you put the emphasis.

  1. Yeah you better make sure you’re a bit more respectful towards me this week. Don’t do it cause you care do it cause your scared. I don’t know why this kind of thinking made me laugh so much. Maybe it was where they put the emphasis.

  2. That actually was the gist of it. It’s all “lest the oppressed be compelled to find reason to rebel.” It’s pretty cool.
