Health or Buildings

Why does private health insurance seem to work so badly in comparison to property insurance? With property insurance there's an incentive to commit fraud, because you might be able to make money out of it. It's hard to imagine making money out of breaking your leg, because you were overinsured. I suppose someone like Jennifer Lopez might have an incentive to let her bum get fat, or badly burned, because she actually gets paid by her insurer (I think) if something bad happens to it. But generally you don't make money out of it. The other reason is that most people don't actually like getting hurt or sick. So you'd think they would try to avoid it. There's less incentive not to burn down your shop.

But property insurance generally works. And health insurance generally doesn't. It's a funny thing.
