Bandit Queen

David's post reminded me that I should try to watch Bandit Queen. So I did on Monday night. It was an awful film, but good. Very well made and very interesting. It's the sort of vicious revenge film that leaves me wondering if it would be better just to kill the lot of us. I wasn't that disturbed by the end of Dogville nor by the massacre in Bandit Queen. Which is disturbing. I end up feeling like my moral standards are for sale to the highest bidder (or best film-maker).

It's worth seeing this film. You get to see India a little bit the way women might experience it. And it shows a fascinating mix of two different kinds of men. I find it amazing that a woman could ever function in a society that treats them so badly. But I suppose it isn't as simple as that. There is a deep respect for women that runs through the society, which I think is stronger than here. India had female leaders far earlier than we would even have considered, and you can't fake that kind of respect.
