66% of Americans think that the soldiers who abused Iraqi prisoners should be tried for a crime. That means 34% of Americans don't think they should be tried for a crime. What sort of a fucked up country is leading this world?

Do you really think Australia (or most other countries, for that matter) would be very different? If you do, you may be underestimating the power of propaganda.
And while I can’t compare this specific aspect of the issue to the Australian population, I will add that you should also consider the fact that most of “red America” (i.e., a the majority) is obtaining their information from either corporate-run, right-wing newspapers. (As opposed to “blue America,” and much of the rest of the western world, who is primarily hearing from reactionist, left-wing newspapers and television. :) ) Considering this fact, 34% is actually surprisingly low to me, and I’m grateful for that.
And of course, there is the fact that 72% of statistics are made up on the spot. :)
Try to have a little perspective on the issue….

I don’t recall saying anywhere that I’m not incredibly ashamed of my own country. But this sort of statistic is an ugly reminder. I guess in this instance there isn’t a lot of room for idealogical bias to get in the way. You can of have to say that those 34% really feel that sort of treatment is acceptable. With the war itself, there are complications. Whether or not to charge the soldiers isn’t complicated at all.
Sad to say, I’m probably not that surprised either. And Australians might well react the same way. I guess at least no one trusts Australia to be in charge of anything important.
