US President George W Bush has urged Cubans to work for democratic change in his first public comments since Fidel Castro had stomach surgery on Monday.

Total bloody bollocks. This is maybe the shit that makes me most angry. Why do we deplore the leadership if the only poor country in the world that actually treats its poorest like they are worth something?
That said, I really hope someone clever comes up with a way of building Cuba-like countries without all the police-stateyness.
I’m not sure what “Cuba-like” means in this case.
Maybe you could do a paper on it.

yar… I really hope Cuba can come through the upcoming leadership transition. I like a lot of what Fidel does. but the police-stateyness and the fact that the next in line for the command is a 75 year old… they are the two biggest internal problems Cuba has in my little opinion.

I’ve read recently that the Cuban military actually has a lot of control, and the transition plan is pretty well thought through. Although I think it will be hard for the whole thing to work without a public figure like Fidel. Militaries also have done very good jobs of being in government in the past.
