Libertarians

Liberty is a pretty important thing for most libertarians. They kind of hold it up as the ultimate good. They say that men must be free and that, in fact, all other concerns must be laid aside to achieve one's liberty. They assume that any form of liberty is superior to any form of totalitarianism. But I find that I am not ever that convinced. By the time they've finished explaining all the awful things we must be willing to put up with in order to get our freedom, the average communist dictatorship is starting to look fairly dreamy. Maybe that's why I'll never be a true libertarian. I'm just not willing to live free and miserable. But I find it odd that so many supposedly rational and brilliant men have arbitrarily decided that liberty is more important than anything else.

I've been reading a good speech by Kevin Rudd on Friedrich Hayek, who is a dufus. It's talking about what is wrong with libertarianism. It's worth a read.
