Libby, Jem and I went to the Vanguard on Sunday to see Laura play. Some guy called Earl was there too. He played afterwards, but he wasn't as good. He was kind of a cross between Ben Harper and Jamie Cullum.
It was a nice night. Especially once Jem and I bought our potato bowl. At first we thought it was this enormous mound of ice-cream, because there was all this sour cream and we only saw it from a distance. But it wasn't. It was an enormous bowl of potato. Jem and I agreed that it wasn't as good as we'd hoped, but it was still great. Descriptions of potato dishes have a tendency to oversell themselves. It's nothing lacking in the potato. I just wonder if because it's such a subtle food, that it's true brilliance can only be brought out by the most skilled hands.
The music was good too. Laura keeps getting better. Her new song is probably her best. It was real dandy seeing her again, although we didn't stay for that long. Erica and Tully were there too. It turns out I did see Tully at Succulent all those months ago. She was just the same, but older. During Laura's set she told Erica to request a song that Laura had written when we were going out. Laura didn't know I was there, and it was a bit embarassing. But good also.
It made me think all over again how many lovely people I've been privileged to know in my life. Or perhaps just how lovely the few I've known have been. If people I haven't met are anything like as lovely as the people I have met, then the world must be a marvellous place indeed.
