It’s kind of like super-anonymous virtual web hosting. You can backup virtual machines, and create images on other machines. The machines have no internal long-term state, so everything get’s saved somewhere else somehow. Network access between the compute cloud and Amazon S3 is free. So S3 is kind of like your hard-disk.
You can a Linux machine, with awesome specs, for hardly any cost at all. And you can use as much or as little as you want. People have started reselling Amazon S3 space. They’ll start selling Amazon images, and all the hosting companies will go out of business. Even small businesses could replace their servers with this thing. If Amazon does it well, for a lot of people hardware could become completely irrelevant.
