Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud

Oh my word. Amazon is so cool. They've built an elastic compute cloud, and it rocks I reckon. The sort of thing you might use to take over the world if you had a mind.

Comments

  1. I’m uncertain of the significance.

It looks like one of thos fundamental things that gives people a lot of peower to Do Stuff, but what is teh expected Stuff, in this case?

Search for Amazon things in special ways?
Buy Amazon things in special ways?
    Find extraterrestrial messages?
    Render enzyme folding?

  2. It’s kind of like super-anonymous virtual web hosting. You can backup virtual machines, and create images on other machines. The machines have no internal long-term state, so everything get’s saved somewhere else somehow. Network access between the compute cloud and Amazon S3 is free. So S3 is kind of like your hard-disk.

You can a Linux machine, with awesome specs, for hardly any cost at all. And you can use as much or as little as you want. People have started reselling Amazon S3 space. They’ll start selling Amazon images, and all the hosting companies will go out of business. Even small businesses could replace their servers with this thing. If Amazon does it well, for a lot of people hardware could become completely irrelevant.
