Monkeys

I don't understand how calling Andrew Symonds a monkey is a racist insult. He does look kind of like a monkey.

Swans Vs Magpies

Dad, Matt and I went the Swans match tonight at Telstra Stadium. It's an excellent stadium. I like the circular ramps. And the station queuing. Although the whole stadium only has one ATM. And it happened to be right at the bottom. And we were right at the top. There was a big queue. I suppose that's what happens when you make 100,000 people all share one ATM. They have to queue for it.

It was a sad match. Everyone played badly. But Sydney played much, much worse than Collingwood. Much worse. They lost. Quite badly, but not as badly as we'd expected.

It was probably good Ma didn't come. It was very cold. And her team lost.

My grandma is a piker

Ma had said she would go to the football with us this evening. But just because she's 93 and just because it's forecast to snow she's decided she isn't going to come. So it's just going to me and my dad and Matt.

Giant run

Jo and I (and little bit of Emily) went for a giant run just then. I thought it would be about 4 or 5 kms, but I reckon it ended up being closer to 7 or 8 km. We ran non-stop for about 40 minutes. I haven't been for a job in a good while, and I'm starting to feel seedy. I was reading today about the different sorts of fats. Fat makes me feel a bit gross, and I was reading that some sorts of fats are really hard to get rid of. There is this fat called "visceral fat" which lodges itself between all the organs in your stomach. It's what gives people beer bellies.

So apparently I read this paper and I have to run 33kms a week for six months. I will lose 7% of my visceral fat and 8% (or something) of my subcutaneous fat on average across the sample (of one). I reckon they give the fats such disgusting names because they want us to be disgusted and start exercising. Jogging for an hour seems far more appealing than have a belly full of visceral fat, even if you hate exercise.

I give my new regime about three days. Luckily I forget nearly every paper I read in about that long.

World Cup 2006

What a sad final it was. France played so good. And poor old Zidane. I'm not sure why I have so much more sympathy for Zidane than I do for the Italian that got headbutted. It was a pretty good headbutt. And he was such a nice player. When his shoulder was dislocated by one of the Italians he just sat on the field and waited for someone to come and pop it back in for him. Most players would have been rolling around crying. Or perhaps they all save the crying for the times when it doesn't hurt much at all. Zidane was a really cool guy though. He was friendly to everyone that I saw, and they were mostly friendly back. Despite my sadness at Italy winning, and Italy winning the way they did, I thought most of the Italians were really lovely and friendly. Buffon and Gaston especially. When Zidane headbutted Materazi, Buffon yelled for him to be sent off, and then gave him a hug.

Despite their friendliness, the Italians didn't play like they were in a World Cup at all. The French did nothing for the first half, and the Italians only did marginally more. But then the French got heaps better, and the Italians, if anything, got worse. The Italians never seemed to have the ball for the last 75 minutes, and the French were belting it all over. But, as usual, being the vastly superior team for two thirds of a soccer match isn't necessarily enough.

In the end it came down to the goalies. Buffon saved the important header, and Bartez didn't save the important header. There's consolation in the fact that the first French penalty was pretty doubtful, and Toni's offside header probably wasn't offside. The score could have been quite different. Which at least would have stopped it from ending with penalties, but wouldn't have made the outcome more reflective of the game or more satisfying.

Stupid Lousy Crap Soccer Rules

A miserable end to a fun old Australian World Cup. The most annoying thing was that the Aussies had been getting away with fouls far worse than that one all game. We tried to philosophise about it, but ultimately it's just crap.

Hiddink: Sorry about the economy

But it's lovely to hear Down Under is going crazy … I think today, over there, it's Friday morning, so the work presence will be very low in Australia. It's damaging the Australian economy, and I'm sorry about that. Guus

Futbol

So tired now. Even though I seem to have got a lot sleep.

The game was great. Australia played really well. We could easily have won it I reckon. They stuffed up so many shots at the last minute. It got a bit painful by the end, because none of them went in. I was really happy that Ronaldo did most of the work for the main Brazil goal. Everyone was really mean to him. But I thought he played really well. The one thing he stuffed up they blamed on his weight, or lack of form. But Kewell and Bresciano and Viduka messed up plenty of shots between them. I thought Viduka, Neil and Emerton were the best players. They looked like they played better than the Brazilians.

Having all those folks at the back seemed to work really well. Kaka and Ronaldinho didn't seem to be able to do anything. Although it often seemed like there was an Aussie at the Brazilian goals completely by himself.

Disappearing Athletes

Sierra Leone's Melbourne 2006 attache, Robert Green, said he had not given up hope that the disappearances were due to an innocent misadventure.

Some of the athletes representing Sierra Leone have disappeared. They seem to be hoping that they haven't run away, but will be found at the bottom of a river somewhere. What sort of "innocent misadventure" could result in seven athletes disappearing?
